5/28/24 New Releases
We got singles! One from nightlife, "i/o", one from The Menzingers, "Gone West", and two from A Place For Owls: My Own, Pt. 2 and Tell Me Who You Are, Pt. 2.
New Music…Tuesday? It’s more likely than you think. We’ll get into those in just a second. Make sure to come by this Friday for 95COROLLA’s new album release (and hopefully some other records to cover!) Let’s get into it.
nightlife - i/o
So you notice me when I’m alone but
I’ve never seen your screen name before
What a fun song! nightlife uses some edm beats with hard guitar behind it to great effect, making a great crowd pleaser that delves into a few breakdowns to mix it up. Sometimes people need a break from the pit and just need to dance, and i/o delivers. Honestly this feels like an opener for a Carly Rae concert (high praise).
The Menzingers - Gone West
Time to give up all you know
The line will leave without you
The Menzingers are a band that got me through college; On The Impossible Past will always have a place in my heart. I think they’ve been reaching for that pinnacle ever since, and Gone West is another failed attempt to capture the magic.
Don’t get me wrong, its fine. It’s just not Obituaries, After the Party, or I Don’t Wanna Be An Asshole Anymore. It’s like watching Dropkick Murphies put out new work.
A Place for Owls - My Own, Pt. 2 and Tell Me Who You Are, Pt. 2
When I feel afraid, there’s light under your door
When I feel ashamed, your presence is the cure
This is a chill and very pleasant song. Sort of Death Cab/Defeater vibes with the lyrics. One of those songs that gets played the back half of a setlist before the end of show heaters, let the drummer grab some water.
Your promises sometimes eclipse
My tears and empty dread
Tell Me You Are, Pt 2 amps up the intensity quite a bit, ending in a near-chant that feels very “end of the album.” Features one of my favorite vocal effects with the voice tearing from emotion. Another release I can add to my “my partner would actually come to this show with me” list. Great stuff here.
Good stuff today! Make sure to follow me on Twitter to let me know what I should cover next, and to keep informed on new music coming out. Have a good one!
